HOME Project

Home (hm) n. The place where something is discovered,
originated, developed or promoted

“HOME gave us a place and a voice.”

HOME Project, founded by a group of daring youth and adult members of Alternatives in Action (AIA), has turned young people’s dreams into reality since 1996. AIA created HOME with the goal of understanding what youth need to develop into self-assured, effective citizens of their communities.

With support from caring adult “coaches” and experienced “youth coaches,” HOME members, over 400 youth per year, work in teams after school & in the summer to develop real-world community projects that reflect young people’s interests and their community’s needs.

HOME currently partners with schools in West Alameda and East Oakland.

Accomplishments:
Launched arts-based campaign for nonviolence;
Raised positive health awareness through the Young Women’s Fitness Challenge;
Improved access to college for low-income youth through free college tours and workshops;
Opened a youth-run sound recording studio;
Built the largest outdoor skate park in Northern California in just 10 days with 900 youth and adult volunteers;
And more!
